It's Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve....the night that Santa Clause comes to visit every child on Earth (or so believed), and families do many different traditions; but I have realized that my family does not have any traditions. So, I have made up my mind to have family traditions. I started by adopting a friend's tradition of "Cookie Sunday", but it ended up being "Cookie Wednesday". We baked cookies and gave them to the neighbors as presents. I am thinking that we need to read "The Night Before Christmas" and the "Christmas Story". But why do we celebrate traditions? Is it because we have this comfort in knowing what to expect in stead of "winging it"? I think that we as a society and the human species, we are social and like routine, that is exactly what a tradition is. I am a creature of habit (as most of us are) and I am wanting to go to a Christmas Eve service and return in attending church. I want my children to know the exact, real meaning of Christmas. The birth of Jesus Christ. The night that Mary had traveled the long road back to Bethlehem, on the back to the donkey. It is a time that is sacred in the hearts of many, and my family has turned away from that.
Dear Lord, please let me remember the meaning of Christmas, that it is the time that You, my Savior was born! I pray that You help others to remember what the TRUE meaning of Christmas is!
~Amen
When you were little, we did have traditions... starting with Great Grandpa (who learned it from his parents) the tree was never set up and decorated; only the tree stand and skirt in the corner... Santa brought magic seeds that he placed in the tree stand and added water to make the Christmas tree grow with all the ornaments attached! Along with the presents that also by magic appeared under the tree!
ReplyDeleteWe started to decorate our tree two weeks before Christmas and it came down on New Year's Day... that was when you were little; then life got a bit complicated... Oh, and the midnight mass was hard to accomplish with six little kids who couldn't stay awake!!! I'm sorry you feel that there wasn't enough to remember from years ago.. but we did always go to the movies over Christmas break and dinner at McDonalds... not much money and a mom who worked too much for what she had made it rough for you and your brothers... Just remember, we never had a lot, but we did have each other; to me, that was the greatest gift. Love you and Merry Christmas!
As for traditions, I don't remember much when i was little, but I was referring more to my family (my husband and kids). but that's a great story!
